A Mpumalanga traffic cop is nursing stab wounds after being attacked by a taxi passenger.
The passenger had been threatening people in the taxi which was travelling on the D797 between Tonga and Kamhlushwa last Friday.
Luckily, the taxi driver spotted traffic cops by the side of the road and brought the taxi to a stop. The cops ordered the passenger to get out and he demanded that they give him his taxi fare.
When the cops didn’t listen, the passenger became agitated and started throwing stones at them.
“When the traffic cops tried to arrest him, he stabbed one of them, which led to another cop taking out a gun and shooting the man in his arm,” said a witness.
The cop is said to have sustained serious injuries. He is recovering at a hospital in Mbombela.
The suspect is also receiving treatment under police guard at Tonga Hospital.
