Ahead of today’s Soweto Derby, we take a look at the players that have found the back of the net on the most frequent basis over the course of the last decade.
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have contested 20 league games since November 2007, with a combined 39 goals scored during that time period, but it is Siphiwe Tshabalala who has been the most successful player in front of goal in their league meetings since that game, with three goals scored in all 20 of those games.
Benni McCarthy is joined in second place by Excellent Walaza, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Katlego Mashego, with the group making two, six, 11 and 14 appearances respectively and contributing two goals each.
However, when it comes to the Carling Black Label Cup, no player has more than a single goal to his name, with just seven goals being scored since the competition’s inception in 2011. The players to have found the net in those six games are Benni McCarthy, Abia Nale, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Sifiso Myeni, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Erick Mathoho and Lewis Macha.
Today’s game gives the current Amakhosi and Buccaneers stars a chance to write their names into history and join that exclusive list of players.
The game will get underway at 15:00 in the FNB Stadium.
