The Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula is set to visit the OR Tambo International Airport on Monday.
According to a statement issued by his office, the minister will be meeting with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Management, Home Affairs, State Security and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Departments at the airport “to get an appreciation of the safety and security challenges at the airport.”
OR Tambo has been in the headlines for a number of contentious reasons, including a brazen robbery of R20.7 million worth of bank notes from Standard Bank at the airport by men dressed as police officers, and media coverage of syndicates working from the airport that target travelers in hijackings and house robberies.
In his statement, the Minister reiterated the importance of OR Tambo International to the South African economy and stresses the need to make it safe as one of our national key points.
