Eligible voters have until Tuesday to register for the May 7 national and provincial elections. The voter’s roll will close at midnight on Tuesday night as the election date is published in the government gazette.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it will deploy additional staff to its local offices to ensure that all eligible voters who are in the queue by 5 pm get a chance to register.
After the proclamation of the election date the IEC will release an election timetable that will include deadlines for candidates’ lists, applications for special votes and notifications to vote outside the country.
The commission has exceeded the 80% registration target it had set for registrations for the election.
The IEC says it recorded just over 25 million people on its voter’s roll. IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula says during the past two registration window periods 2.3 million people registered to vote for the first time.
