Used condoms and animal carcasses are causing endless trouble for residents and the municipality.
These are just some of the items found in the blocked sewerage drains between Matlapaneng Village and Pudimoe Location in Taung, North West.
Residents claimed a truck belonging to the Greater Taung Municipality spattered human waste in the river near Matlapaneng Village while unblocking the drains.
And now grazing animals drink water contaminated with kak, after sewage trickled into the river. “It was wrong for that truck driver to pollute the river,” said Lesedi Sekgweleo.
Resident Mapule Nteta said: “This should be reported to an environmental health practitioner. We want an investigation.”
Katlego Gabanakgosi, the municipal manager, said blockages were often caused by farmers..
“However, the municipality has unblocked the major sewerage line. We’ll also set up a meeting with farm owners and the tribal authority to resolve the matter.”
He said the farmers weren’t primary users of the land, but said the land was leased to third parties, which is the problem.
“The aim is to fence the area so no unauthorised people can gain access to it.”
Gabanakgosi advised people to avoid throwing things like condoms and used sanitary pads into rivers and drains.
