MEN claim that Durban’s magoshas or prostitute’s are ripping them off by pretending to be hikers.
Once the women get in their cars, they scream and demand money from drivers, threatening to hurt them if they don’t pay.
One man told how he fell victim to a magosha’s trick early on Saturday morning.
The SunTeam found him wrestling with a woman who called herself
Zama Makhathini in his car in Moore Road.
She shouted and demanded that he should pay up, while he accused her of being a crook.
The man said she asked him for a lift to the CBD just after he dropped his wife off.
“I picked her up in Umbilo Road. She was hiking and looked vulnerable and desperate. I felt sorry for her and gave her a lift,” he said.
“But as we were crossing the robots here in Moore Road, she started screaming and jamming my gear lever. This forced me to stop as she accused me of having had sex with her and refusing to pay,” said the man.
The woman clung to the gear lever in front of the SunTeam. She looked upset and said she was on the street to work, not for men to take advantage of her.
“You f*cked me in this filthy car of yours and now you must pay. My vagina is not for free. I want R50 or you’re going nowhere. You think you are smart,” she said.
Then she demanded to be taken back to Umbilo Road.
The man angrily pushed her out of his car without paying.
The SunTeam chased after him to find out more.
He said: “Today I learned a good lesson – not to help anyone, especially a woman. She was clearly on a mission to get something out of me. Please do not write this – it will embarrass me and my family.” He said he would tell his wife about the incident.
An onlooker said he was caught in the same trap.
“I paid because I was embarrassed,” said the man. He said he didn’t report the case as it would harm his image.
Captain Thulani Zwane said: “We aren’t aware of these incidents but we would like to advise people to call 10111 if they’re threatened. Drivers mustn’t give lifts as it could be dangerous.”
