Tjovitjo Premiers Tonight on SABC1

The much-anticipated Tjovitjo will give dancers a chance to showcase their skill. The new SABC1 drama series will shine the spotlight on the pantsula culture, whose practitioners are usually associated with crime.

But the show also aims to change this perception by showing a side people outside the culture never consider.

It will show the many hoops pantsula dancers have to jump in pursuit of chasing success the good old fashioned way.

One of the cast members, Tebogo Chauke, will play Schoolboy, a character who falls in love with dancing in his teens.

The 33-year-old actor and choreographer from Protea Glen in Soweto said he related well with the role.

Said Tebogo: “I’m excited to be part of the cast because this doesn’t feel like work, as I’ve also gone through this.

“As a dancer, I know what it’s like to start from scratch and build your brand. It’s hard to make it, especially as a pantsula dancer because of how people perceive you.”

Schoolboy is the right-hand man to Mafred, played by popular actor Warren Masemola.

They are the choreographers of the dance crew Tjovitjo.

The actor said the content of the series aimed to inspire up-and-coming film makers to produce locally-made content.

“The series also lets viewers into the dancers’ lives. The director did a thorough job researching the characters. They’re everyday guys trying to make a living.”

Catch the premiere of Tjovitjo on SABC1 tonight at 8pm .
