SuperSport United and Polokwane City played to a 2-2 draw in an Absa Premiership clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
SuperSport were out of the blocks quickly and had an early opportunity in the fourth minute, when Bradley Grobler and Jeremie Brockie combined to provide an opening for Thuso Phala, but the winger failed to make the most of it. Five minutes later, Togolese midfielder Dove Wome could have put the Pretoria team into the lead, but he scuffed his effort wide of goal.
At the other end, Polokwane were giving as good as they were getting, with Malawian Esau Kenyanda hitting the post with a header and, later, Thapelo Tshilo heading wide.
SuperSport had two more opportunities when Mario Booysen headed wide and another effort from Wome was saved by Polokwane goalkeeper, George Chigova.
The Pretoria side’s pressure, however, paid off in the 32nd minute when Phala whipped in the cross and Wome was in the box to steer the ball into the net and give his team a well-deserved 1-0 advantage.
Two minutes before the break, Wome had a chance to double SuperSport’s lead, but failed to find the target.
Early in the second half, Brockie was in on goal, after being set-up by Michael Morton, but shot straight at Chigova. Minutes later, Brockie had another opening, but, this time, the New Zealander fired wide.
Polokwane then levelled matters in the 64th minute through Kanyenda, but their joy was short-lived as, three minutes later, SuperSport took the lead again when Dean Furman scored to make the score 2-1.
In the 70th minute, SuperSport made a change in attack, taking off Phala and bringing on Kingston Nkhatha. The home side had two more chances to increase their advantage, but Grobler shot straight at Chigova and Brockie headed wide.
With five minutes to go, SuperSport substituted Grobler and brought on promising youngster, Morne Nel.
Just when it looked like SuperSport would pull off the win, Polokwane equalised again when Tshepo Matsemela scored in the 89th minute.
