Bullets were flying and smoke hung in the air as protesters and taxi drivers
insulted each other yesterday. The trouble started after residents of Pienaarspoort squatter camp in Mamelodi East, Tshwane, blocked Solomon Mahlangu Road with burning tyres and rocks in the early hours of the morning.

Taxi drivers were furious at the protesters as they prevented their vehicles from entering or leaving the area.

Soon, the taximen started shooting into the air to break up the crowd. One witness said a taxi came speeding towards the protesters at about 9am.

“As he approached, he took out his gun and shot in the air. This angered residents, who charged at him with stones.”

More taxis arrived on the scene and their drivers also started shooting into the air, which sent the protesters running into the bush nearby. But the residents regrouped and decided to call the police, who responded quickly.

Resident Motlafela Tshipe said the protesters wanted to get the attention of Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga.

Meanwhile, in Lethabong, Tshwane, people blocked the busy Bronkhorstspruit Road with burning tyres, angering motorists who had to use the N4 toll road.

Resident Melva Kgomo (40) said they were taking turns in blocking the road
until the mayor listened to them.

She said if they were ignored, they would block the N4 as well.

“We came here in 2010, but there are no signs of development. We have no water, sanitation, roads or electricity.”

Captain Michael Mbewe said four people were bust for stirring public violence.

Mayoral spokesman Samkelo Mgobozi said Msimanga would not be meeting with protesters as he had a full schedule.
