Riverlea Violent Protests Still Going On Major Routes Blocked: Jo’burg

Cops tried to disperse the protesters from Zamimpilo squatter camp outside Riverlea. The violent protesters set alight a Rea Vaya bus station in Bosmont.

Burnt

Blue Monday was made even worse by a housing protest that resulted in major routes in Joburg getting blocked.

Ward councillor Basil Douglas said they had asked the member of the mayoral committee for housing to address them but he had refused.

“He said he won’t come to Riverlea. He wants them to meet at the police station,” he said.

Joburg Metro cops spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said protesters burned tyres and placed rocks at the intersection of Main Reef and Commando roads.

“This is affecting traffic from Roodepoort as well as Soweto,” he said.Gauteng police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele said no arrests had been made.

“A case of malicious damage to property has been opened,” he said.

The City of Joburg’s human settlements spokesman, Buntukazi Xuba, said it was not true that the councillor didn’t want to meet with residents.

“He had been waiting for the allocation list from the region so that it would be made available during a community meeting,”
said Xuba.

“The councillor has received the list, so the process will move forward, starting with a meeting with the leadership.”
