Police Warn Media to KEEP Quiet about Senzo Meyiwa. Police have hit out at what they describe as “negative media reports” surrounding the murder eight months ago of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain, Senzo Meyiwa.

National police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale rubbished claims that the investigation into the death was not being treated as a priority.

“The investigators have appealed to Senzo’s father on several occasions not to release details of the investigation to the public. This is not helping at all, because we are now faced with a situation where one of the possible suspects has gone underground after hearing through Senzo’s father that the police were looking for him,” he said in a statement.

Makgale said that a high-level team had been assembled, drawn from the detectives, the Hawks and the crime intelligence unit. The team included a forensic psychologist.

“A detailed investigation plan was compiled and is being meticulously implemented. So far we have collected close to 110 documents, inclusive of the statements of 86 possible witnesses.

“Some of the individuals had to be re-interviewed several times as new information came to light. The people who were in the house at the time of the incident are co-operating fully with the investigation. We are also following up on leads provided by other witnesses who were outside the house at the time of the incident,” he said.

Makgale said the team had been to various parts of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to follow up on close to 100 leads received through Crime Stop, police stations, government and soccer officials.

“We followed each and every lead painstakingly. Almost 30 people have already been questioned. Given the heightened media attention, information peddlers are also very active, spreading cooked-up stories about who killed Senzo. Other people take what is in the media, spice it up and approach us with stories,” he said.

The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that Meyiwa’s father, Sam, had expressed frustration with the police investigation.

Meyiwa was killed in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in October last year.

Two men allegedly entered the house and demanded cellphones before shooting Meyiwa and running away.

Zamokuhle Mbatha was arrested but the charges were later withdrawn due to a lack of evidence.

Mbatha is reportedly suing Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and the NPA for R7.5 million and R2.5million respectively.
