THIS madala has been suffering for 12 years since thugs shot him four times. Now he wants his leg to be cut off because the wound won’t heal and it’s rotting.Zakhele Manana (67) from Protea Glen, Soweto, said: “Two youngsters jumped into my yard in 2002 and demanded money. “I didn’t have any and they fired four bullets at me, injuring my leg.” He said that he had an operation at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital to put steel in his leg.
“The staff members at the hospital were not so helpful. I buy bandages and painkillers with my pension money,” he said. Zakhele’s wife, Regina (58), said her husband cries all night. “The blood from the wound messes the bedding and it smells,” she said.
Regina, who relies on piece jobs to feed the family of seven, is desperate for Zakhele to be helped.Simon Zwane, spokesman for Gauteng health department, said hospital management met Zakhele and discussed his condition and treatment options.
“Following the meeting, Zakhele signed a letter prohibiting us from sharing information on his medical records with the media,” said Zwane. “The hospital will continue to provide him with the best possible care, leading to a speedy recovery.”
