A newborn baby boy has been stolen from the Natalspruit Hospital in Katlehong, the Gauteng health department said on Thursday.
The baby was stolen on Wednesday, shortly after being born, the department said in a statement.
The mother, Lindelwa Vivi, 27, was discharged and left the nursery for a few minutes to go to the bathroom.
“As I walked in back from the toilet, I noticed that my baby was gone,” she said, according to the statement,
The baby had been wrapped in a hospital gown.
Security was immediately informed, but the baby could not be found.
Police were alerted and statements were taken.
The hospital said it was investigating the matter.
“As the hospital, we are investigating the circumstances surrounding the missing… child and with the assistance of the community and the police, we hope that the baby will be found in good health,” said hospital acting CEO Gilbert Motlatla.
