A woman who has been on the run since the mutilated body of her seven-month-old baby was discovered in a Diepsloot shack has been found – at a tavern, allegedly drunk.
The 23-year-old mother was found by police in the Randburg CBD on Tuesday night – two days after her infant was found at her shack on Sunday morning.
Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said someone from Diepsloot saw the woman at the tavern and alerted police.
“She was just relaxing in the tavern, drunk,” Mofokeng said.
The woman was arrested and and she was formally charged with murder.
Her boyfriend was also arrested in Diepsloot on Wednesday.
Mofokeng said the woman did not resist arrest and appeared surprised at the arrest.
“She said she did not even know that her child was dead. She refused to say where she had been all this time.
“She is a suspect now and has been taken for questioning.”
While she claims that she did not know her child was dead, the woman is believed to have fled when a resident called the police to report her child’s death on Sunday.
Her other child, a two-year-old, is believed to be with the suspect’s mother.
The cause of the infant’s death is not yet known.
Police are waiting for a post-mortem to obtain the cause of death.
The police’s Mofokeng said the girl had wounds on her face, legs and hands.
The preliminary report from the pathologist stated that the girl had been bitten by rats, Mofokeng said.
A resident who had been one of the first people to arrive at the scene disputed the police version, saying rats could not have caused such mutilation.
Other neighbours suspected that the killing could have been a muti murder.
The woman’s relatives, who were at the Diepsloot shack that day, said the mother liked to drink a lot and had been at a shebeen the night before her child’s death.
Another relative said the mother had left the infant alone while she went drinking at a shebeen.
The woman was expected to appear on charges of murder and child neglect at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The boyfriend, aged 30, has been charged with murder and would appear in the same court on Friday.
