But a few minutes after giving birth, she decided to kill her newborn baby.
On Thursday, Precious Rooibaatjie (33) was found guilty of murder.
She was sentenced to 12 years but four of them were suspended.
She will effectively serve eight years in prison.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Sergio Kock said: “On 16 October Precious Rooibaatjie was found guilty in the Northern Cape High Court of the murder of her new born baby.
“On 4 September 2011, the accused was arrested after she brutally killed her own baby by drowning him. She was out on warning.
“This followed after our members received information about the ordeal. Upon further investigation, police found the badly decomposed baby under the bed”.
“ A post mortem revealed that the child died of multiple injuries and not from drowning,” said Kock.
The cop said Precious gave birth at her house in Matlhomola kasi, Griekwastad in September 2011.
“After giving birth this woman put her baby boy in a bucket full of water with the intention of drowning him. But the baby did not die.
“She then took the baby out of the water and flushed him down the toilet.
“After all these attempts the
baby died from multiple injuries, including broken ribs.
“She then put his body in a plastic bag and shoved him under her bed.
“But the smell coming from her house made the neighbours suspicious and they alerted the cops.”
