A woman who got herself into hot water by borrowing money to gamble found herself in even deeper water, thanks to the mashonisas who lent her the money.
The woman started off borrowing HK$37 000 (about R64 200) from Lai Man-hon (30) and Chan Tsz-ming (28). But luck wasn’t with her and she ended up borrowing HK$60 000 (about R104 000), which Man-hon and Tsz-ming wanted repaid in 20 days.
According to Coconuts Hongkong, the 25-year-old woman left her home in Hong Kong last year to visit Macau. Macau is a city famous for its glitz and gambling in the south of China, near Hong Kong.
The next day when she was trying to catch a boat back to Hong Kong, Man-hon and Tsz-ming were waiting for her at the pier, said the report. Claiming she owed them HK$180 000, they made her go with them to a hotel. They then forced her to strip and get in a bath while filming her and taking photos. They refused to let her leave the hotel room for 12 hours.
On Monday, Man-hon and Tsz-ming were sentenced to 28 months in jail for extortion (trying to get money through force) and other crimes.
The judge is reported to have described the case as being very serious, and probably part of a bigger web of organised crime. He said the victim had suffered terrible shock and anxiety.
