Mafikizolo Star Nhlanhla Nciza, has been thrown into a sea of debt. This after someone hacked into her social media account and stole her cellphone number. The perpetrator then started borrowing money from her contacts.
Nhlanhla said her phone was off until when she left for Kenya for a performance.
“When I landed, people were calling me to check if I was fine as they’d been receiving WhatsApp messages from my phone,” said Nhlanhla.
“I couldn’t do anything because I was in Kenya. So, I asked someone to block my number. They did, but the hackers got through again.”
She said after blocking her number, things got worse. H ackers unblocked her number and asked almost all her contacts for cash.
“I had to change the number I’d been using for years. I’m still livid, especially at Vodacom as people have lost lots of money.”
She said: “Shame, my people all sent cash to these thugs thinking I was in trouble.”
Nhlanhla added that the story would be different from person to person. She said her friends lost money but Vodacom didn’t help.
“Even after the SIM swap, my number wasn’t working. I fought with Vodacom to do something and I wasn’t getting any joy.”
The singer said the last straw was when the thugs impersonated her.
“They phoned Lira, pretending to be me. They claimed Theo was arrested and I didn’t want the media to find out and that I needed cash. She called Theo and, luckily, he was with me.”
Nhlanhla has since opened a fraud case.
Police confirmed that a case of fraud was opened but no arrest had been made.
Vodacom spokesperson, Byron Kennedy, could not be reached for comment.
