FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi recently committed his future to the Catalan club.Lionel Messi became the first footballer in history to earn a release clause of £263m and to earn £1m a week so we have heard.

The club recently announced that the Argentine had put pen to paper on a new deal in Spain, which will keep him at the club until 2021.

While a release clause of £263m was said to have been inserted into his contract, it is also reported that he will earn £1m a week (R17 million a week) at Barca for the next four years.

The Sunday Times claims no other player in the world has ever earned that much in basic wages, with the 30-year-old now reportedly the highest paid star in football.

It was recently reported that Carlos Tevez is the highest-earning footballer, though Messi is now believed to have overtaken his countryman.
