“Jacaranda FM announced today [Monday] that it has terminated its contract with presenter Miguel Proenca with immediate effect,” spokeswoman Masego Serape said in a statement.
She said there had been an inquiry after allegations that money collected for a 10-year-old cancer sufferer had gone missing.
Station general manager Kevin Fine said: “We have elected to terminate the contract immediately with Proenca, after due consideration of the evidence obtained during the inquiry.”
Proenca had collected money and charitable donations on behalf of Reneilwe Mashego, from Bushbuckridge, in November last year, as part of Jacaranda’s involvement in the project.
Earlier this year, he reportedly gave R300, three blankets, and some clothing items to Reneilwe’s grandmother Cornelia Mashego.
But it was not clear what had happened to several prizes donated by businesses in the city, including electronic equipment worth R9000 donated by Makro, and two R5000 gift vouchers donated by Spar Lowveld.
Serape said Jacaranda FM would deal directly with other parties affected by the allegations.
“There will be stand-in presenters on Jacaranda Regional (RMFM) between 12pm and 4pm weekdays and Saturdays, until a full-time replacement is announced.”
