Harry Kane Brace Destroys Malta As England Thump Them 4 0
The visitors threatened early on but the likes of Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson failed to take advantage of their good chances.
Harry Kane bagged a brace as England thumped Malta 4-0 in their 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday evening.
England had the ball in the back of the net after 22 minutes but Phil Jones’ header was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
The home side, meanwhile, were content to sit back and frustrate the Three Lions as they hardly had any touches in the visitors’ 18-yard box.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half, as England failed to bypass the Malta.
The visitors eventually broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute as Dele Alli picked out Kane, who fired home from 12-yards out.
Malta went close on the hour-mark but Joe Hart produced a good save to keep out Magri’s low effort.
Gareth Southgate opted for a change on 69 minutes as Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy replaced Alli.
Marcus Rashford nearly doubled England’s advantage in the 80th minute, but the striker’s effort from distance was saved by Hogg.
However, England doubled six minutes later as Ryan Bertrand’s strike from distance took a deflection and sailed into the back of net.
Danny Welbeck got the third goal in the first minute of stoppage time, as he latched onto a ball from Kane before lobbing Hogg.
There was enough time for a fourth goal as Rashford’s impressive pass found Kane, who slotted past Hogg for his second of the game.
