Former Everton and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Steven Pienaar who also captained the Bafana Bafana team has signed with South African League champions Bidvest Wits.
The 35-year-old has been without a job since leaving Sunderland at the end of last season, and joins his first club outside the English Premier League in over 10 years.
‘Schillo’ started his career at Ajax Cape Town, before graduating to Ajax Amsterdam in 2001. He made his name during five fruitful years in the Eredivisie, starring alongside the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović, Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder.
A transfer to Borussia Dortmund failed to have the desired effect, with Pienaar subsequently loaned out to Everton, before making the move permanent in 2008.
An ill-advised transfer to Tottenham in 2011 yielded just 10 appearances before he returned to Everton for a further four years, and then spending another season under David Moyes, this time at relegated Sunderland.
Wits have been a team on the rise in recent times, culminating in a first ever League title in the 2016/17 season.
