Former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula set to be the new Parly Speaker
Former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula set to be the new Parly Speaker. This follows her nomination to the position by the ANC’s parliamentary caucus to replace Thandi Modise, who was last week announced to take over Mapisa-Nqakula’s ministry in a cabinet reshuffle by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
FORMER defence and military veterans minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is set to become the next National Assembly speaker.
Widely seen as a casualty or demotion in the reshuffle if the appointed speaker, Mapisa-Nqakula will see her salary increase from R2 401 633 to R2 825 470, on par with that of the deputy president.
The ANC in parliament said she was bringing in a wealth of experience as she had previously served as chief whip and chairperson of joint standing committee on intelligence, among others.
“Mapisa-Nqakula brings a formidable wealth of experience to the new position with a solid track record as a legislator and policymaker, spanning over a number of years,” the party’s caucus said.
Mapisa-Nqakula has served in various capacities for the governing party since the dawn of democracy, including as Home Affairs minister from 2004 to 2009, Correctional Services from 2009 to 2012 and deputy minister from 2002 to 2004.
She is also a former president of the ANC Women’s League and has been in the party’s National Executive Committee since the early ’90s.
