It emerged at the little girl’s burial in Berkman kasi, Mangaung that she was beheaded and her body was stuffed into a 20litres plastic container before she was buried in a pit toilet, allegedly by her own father.
Daily Sun first ran a story about the discovery of her body last month. Nontombi Phakathi, who taught the little girl at school, said: “What amazed us was that her father seemed responsible. He told us Zikhona’s mum had died and that he was taking care of her and her siblings.”
Victim empowerment co-ordinator Constable Maipato Lemao, who helped reunite Zikhona’s siblings with their mum, was so overcome with grief that she couldn’t speak.
Lieutenant Mahlomola Khatisa said: “I was called to the school in 2006 when she had injuries to her arms and she claimed she had been attacked by thugs.”
Last month, Babalwa told Lemao that her father had killed Zikhona and instructed them not to use the pit toilet. Since then, she had suspected that her sister’s body was buried there.
Her father, Xolile Makapula (48), is due to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on a charge of murder today.
