THE argument between the ex-cop and his wife got out of hand. And by the time he shot himself in the head, four people had been wounded, one of them critically, three cars had been destroyed and a house half burnt down.
Former Warrant Officer Jan Letshele (62) had a fight with his wife in the kitchen of their house in Kutloanong, Odendaalsrus, in the Free State.
He held his wife, Maria (58) hostage in the house.
But when she broke away and went outside, Jan followed her to the front yard and shot her four times, three times in the stomach and once in the knee.
Then Jan shot two of the witnesses who were watching from the street. He ran to where his three cars were parked and set them alight. Then he went to the toilet in the back yard- and a single gunshot was heard.
He was found in a pool of blood. He had shot himself in the head and was taken to Bongani Hospital. Later he was transferred to Pelonomi Hospital where he died under police guard on Saturday afternoon.
His wife is still in a critical condition in the same hospital.
Captain Stephen Thakeng said a neighbour called the police but when they arrived, Jan chased them away, while holding his wife hostage.
The cops called for back-up.
“His wife managed to escape when Jan opened the door.
“When the police came back to the house, a reservist constable was shot in the leg.
“A man and a woman sustained leg injuries after being shot.”
Thakeng said then set fire to his three vehicles, a Tata Indica, a Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota bakkie. The kitchen caught fire and burnt down.”
“He shot himself and was taken to hospital. We are investigating a case of arson, four counts of
attempted murder and an inquest has been opened,” said Thakeng.
