They say life begins at 40 and DJ Tira is proof of that. On Thursday the Afrotainment boss celebrated his 40-something birthday. His surprise birthday party was held at the Views, at Twenty5 in Durban, KZN.
It was organised by the Afrotainment staff and his wife, Gugu Kathi. Guests were carefully handpicked. This was chiefly to ensure that Mr Party didn’t find out.
He was blindfolded and when he opened his eyes he saw big smiles from his family and friends who all shouted “surprise”.
“This feels like a rebirth. I’m totally blown away and humbled at the same time. I’ve just found a reason to work even harder,” he said.
Tira thanked his parents for supporting him in pursuing a musical career. He thanked his friends, his staff and his fans for helping to promote his music.
His mother, Abigail Khathi, said: “We are here as your family to give you more blessings to carry you through.”
She thanked him for respecting their wish and finishing his studies.
“We’ve always known you wanted to pursue music, but you respected our wishes and got your degree.”
His friend DJ Sox, whose real name is Mbuso Sokhela, said they had come a long way.
“Our music career started when we were both studying. We started hosting parties at my house.
“Along the way we had a terrible fight but we still missed each other and by God’s grace we managed to find our way back together.”
Bishop Vusi Dube opened the party with a short prayer.
Thina Zungu and Lebo Sekgobela performed.
DJs Sphe and Naves, Cndo, NaakMusiq and Tira were on the decks.
