The boys involved in the fight were reportedly high school pupils.
A resident who didn’t want to be named told Daily Sun: “A 16-year-old was beaten by a group of boys after he demanded that one of them give back a DMD cap he said belonged to him.
“His group then retaliated with pangas and knives.”
But what the community didn’t know was that within hours things would get even worse.
Daily Sun was called to the scene by residents, who said three of the boys had been shot dead.
On arrival the SunTeam saw a blood stain on the soccer field.
“About 50m away a body could be seen covered by a silver sheet.
Another body could be seen facing the cemetery. The three bodies were taken to the Roodepoort mortuary.
Residents said they heard gunshots between 1am and 2am. But they were too scared to go outside.
“We heard booms and shortly afterwards ambulance and police sirens,’’ said a resident, who wanted to be anonymous.
“We think gangsters were fighting because there are a lot of them in this area.”
Constable Thembi Masango told Daily Sun: “The dead were between the ages of 17 and 25 and were shot in the head.
“The motive is still unknown but we will investigate.”
The bodies were found about 100m away from where heavily armed cops were guarding a voting registration station.
“The families of the dead have not yet been traced.
