Dancers brought in to entertain inmates were told of dress code

The organiser of the infamous “str!p show” at Johannesburg Central Prison claims she was shocked by the performance that caused a social media uproar.

Akhona Ndindwa, who owns a company contracted to organise shows at the Naturena prison, spoke to Sowetan yesterday, a month after the Youth Day celebration show that left the department embarrassed.

Ndindwa’s comments come as the spokesman for Gauteng correctional services, Singabakho Nxumalo, confirmed yesterday that the investigation into the incident has been completed and a report has been sent to head office.

“The code enforcement unit of the department is currently studying this report. It shall make an official statement once the process has been finalised in order to ensure that the entire exercise is not deemed to be prejudicial.”

Thirteen prison officials have been served with letters of intention to be suspended. The two pictures, allegedly leaked by wardens who wanted to tarnish the facility’s image, showed three female dancers in lingerie, boots and fishnet stockings dancing with inmates.

“I acknowledge what happened was wrong and their dresses were not appropriate for prison. They misunderstood the costumes issue because they are cabaret performers,” said Ndindwa.

In the meantime, a third picture of the show has emerged, with the female dancers posing for a photo with their male counterpart Cassius Tlhotlhalemaje.

The dancers and inmates had said all along that the performance also included three male dancers who were deliberately cropped out of the two photos.

The Public Servants Association (PSA) confirmed to have in its possession the “correct photographs” showing the dancers clothed in appropriate attire.

PSA’s Gauteng manager Monica Venter said: “All the information we have is still sub judice as there is a pending case against our members.”
