Chelsea speaks on Timo Werner transfer decision following Romelu Lukaku’s arrival

Chelsea speaks on Timo Werner transfer decision following Romelu Lukaku’s arrival. Werner has endured a mixed start to life at Stamford Bridge and now faces fresh competition for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s thriving side. Lukaku returned to Chelsea this summer, leaving Inter Milan in a deal worth £97.5million and claiming the number nine shirt.

Chelsea are not considering selling Timo Werner, despite Romelu Lukaku’s club-record arrival this summer, according to reports. The fee paid is just shy of the £100m British transfer record Manchester City forked out to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa. It puts the 28-year-old in good stead to become Tuchel’s first-choice striker, which has poured slight doubt over Werner’s future at the club.

On Wednesday, a Chelsea supporter aimed abuse at the Germany international during an open training session at Stamford Bridge. Club presenters asked those present in the crowd questions over the stadium’s PA system while the Chelsea squad geared up for training.

One individual embarrassingly took the microphone and loudly stated: “Listen, I’ve got a word. Let’s have it. Get Werner out the club.” From the video footage of the incident, it’s unclear whether Werner heard the rude statement.

But those around the individual in the stand responded with mass boos, with one standing up to ask them, “who do you think you are?” According to the Daily Star, Chelsea have no intention to offload Werner this month, despite the unrest among some fans.

The 25-year-old is in Tuchel’s plans for the season ahead, as the Blues aim to reclaim the Premier League title. Werner scored 12 goals and registered 12 assists in all competitions during his first season at Chelsea after joining from RB Leipzig in a £45m deal.

He was actually the club’s top scorer and playmaker and helped them secure Champions League glory under Frank Lampard and Tuchel. Werner played 90 minutes as the central striker in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in Saturday’s Premier League opener.

He was the least inspiring of the three attackers who started, though, and is expected by many to face the chop for Sunday’s clash with Arsenal.

However, with Lukaku set to come in down the middle, Werner could be pushed out to the left as part of Tuchel’s successful 3-4-3 system. Tuchel also has stars like Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Kai Havertz, who can all play in the attack.
