Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba is continuing with his quest to clean up hijacked buildings.
On Friday the raids intensified, with 29 people arrested as a joint force led by the City’s forensic and investigation services unit targeted several buildings.
They were backed up by department of home affairs officials, Metro cops and Emergency Management Services, as well as other government departments.
Luyanda Mfeka, the municipality’s acting director of communications, said five suspects who were wanted for various crimes were arrested. Two people were bust for being in possession of dangerous weapons and 22 undocumented foreigners were arrested and detained at Hillbrow cop shop.
Mashaba thanked everyone involved in the operation.
“The operation was aimed at bringing back the rule of law in the inner city and taking control from slumlords who take advantage of desperate people.”
He said the City would invite stakeholders in the private sector to partner with them to provide quality low cost housing.
