HIDING a 2kg tin of baby formula and sneaking out of a shop is near impossible.

But these three women say it’s a walk in the park when you have the right connections.

In fact, they don’t even have to hide it, because they work with shop staff and security guards, who also get a share of the stolen items.

On Friday the women’s luck ran out when they were caught trying to sneak out with stolen baby formula at a Shoprite store in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.

The women, one of them a 63-year-old pensioner, were arrested.

The 63-year-old gogo said she survived on shoplifting as her pension money was not enough to support her family.

The other women aged 28 and 42 said they were professional shoplifters.

The 42-year-old woman said she steals from shops because she cannot get a job.

“I tried to look for work, even at farms,” she said.

“No one will hire me. I had to make a plan to support my three kids and this seemed to be the only way.

“The government doesn’t have projects for uneducated people like me. We have to fend for ourselves.”

The 28-year-old woman said she resorted to shoplifting because the father of her three-month-old baby was not supporting her.

“I only steal to feed my baby,” she said.baby formula shoplifter

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Ndlovukazi Mashele confirmed the arrests.

She said shop owners in the area reported shoplifting on a daily basis. Mashele added that most of the suspects were repeat offenders.

“We strongly warn women not steal because if they get arrested they will suffer the consequences,” she said.
