A NEWBORN baby boy is lucky to be alive after being rescued from an abandoned pit toilet.
It’s alleged that the baby was thrown down the unused toilet by his 33-year-old mum at Emhlabeni informal settlement in Umlazi’s A section last Wednesday.
Residents were awoken by the infant’s high-pitched screams. And a brave woman decided to go and investigate.
She got the shock of her life when she discovered a baby screaming for help…
The shaken neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “I heard a baby crying very loud and I decided to go out and check what was wrong.
“I was shocked when I found the baby crying deep in the toilet pit. And that is when I started calling other residents. Fortunately we were able to save him,” she said.
A resident who pulled the baby from the toilet said: “The cries were unbearable. We had no time to waste and that’s when I decided to jump in and save him.”
It is believed that the baby’s mum lives with her boyfriend, with whom she has four other kids.
Colonel Jay Naicker said: “A woman was arrested and charged with child abandonment,” said Naicker.
Police refused to disclose the whereabouts of the baby.
Residents said the suspect was the only woman who was pregnant in the area. She was discovered with blood running down her legs minutes after the baby was rescued.
This led to her arrest. It’s still unknown what may have caused her to dump her new baby.
