ANC MEMBERS FIGHT over multi-million rand water reservoir project. ALLEGATIONS of jobs for pals led to a war between ANC supporters. ANC members in Hammanskraal, Tshwane are engaged in battle over a multi-million rand water reservoir project.
Party members formed two factions – one calling itself diphepheng and the other moerskont – and armed with pangas, stones, axes, grass cutters and golf clubs, the two groups attacked each other near the project site on Friday morning.
Several people were injured while eight cars and two houses were damaged. A pub where the diphepheng faction held a meeting on Thursday was also vandalised.
ANC leaders distanced themselves from the incidents.
Apparently, the trouble started when some ANC members were earlier suspended for misbehavior.
Shortly afterwards, the project’s labour desk officer was also fired, and according to the diphepheng faction, the new officer employed friends from the moerskont faction.
This led to diphepheng members shutting down the project on Tuesday.
Cases of malicious damage to property were opened but no arrests have been made.
