The 32-year-old appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrates Court in Joburg to hear the outcome of her legal representation to the senior public prosecutor to drop the charges against her.
The prosecutor, however, said he had not had enough time to consider the matter and make a decision. The state then asked for another postponement.
Benedict’s lawyer, Kaiser Jonathan, told Daily Sun he hoped the postponement would lead to the authorities coming to their senses and dropping the charge. He said he would submit more information.
The actress, who plays Akhona in Generations, was arrested in December for allegedly stealing a packet of Panado painkillers worth R17,90 from Checkers at Cresta Mall in Joburg. She was released on a warning.
This week, Benedict wrote on her Facebook page that the state was pursuing the case to make an example of her.
She wrote: “I guess it is far easier to make an example of an actress than to admit that perhaps Checkers’ anti-theft machines and cameras might just need a service.”
