Five men have been found guilty of killing a Philippi police officer by the Western Cape High Court on Monday, police said.
The provincial police force welcomed the convictions, Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said in a statement.
Abongile Damente, Zuko Sizane, Onke Mtwalo, Mandilakhe Mbali, and Odwa Matomane would be sentenced on 26 February.
Constable Xolisa Banga was shot while on duty and on her way to the Philippi police station in March 2012. The group confronted her and shot her in the chest. She died on arrival at a hospital.
The five were arrested in December 2012 and charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“When we say criminals killing our police officers will be found, it is not an idle threat to them,” provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Arno Lamoer said.
