5 Arrested for Copper Cable theft

Five people have been arrested in connection with copper cable theft in Robertville, Florida, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

“The suspects were allegedly caught with stolen copper cables weighing about 505kg,” Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said in a statement.

The men aged between 37 and 53 were caught on Friday at a scrapyard. They allegedly tried to bribe police officers who were arresting them.

“The law enforcement officers on the scene are said to have rejected a R30 000 cash bribe, allegedly offered by one of the suspects believed to be the owner of the scrapyard,” said Mavimbela.

He said police believed the cables belonged to Eskom and City Power.

“The suspects will be charged with possession of stolen property. The owner will face an additional charge of bribery.”

The suspects are expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court soon.
