The incident happened in September 2014. The woman, whose identity has been protected, was a passenger on a bus going to Githurai, north of Nairobi. The men apparently attacked her because she was “indecently dressed” in a mini skirt and sleeveless tank top.
Footage of the terrified woman being stripped and manhandled made the rounds on social media at the time, and Kenyans took to the streets to protest her abuse under the hashtag #mydressmychoice.
Magistrate Andayi is quoted as saying during sentencing that the accused took part in a “senseless and uncouth act that they seemed to enjoy because they were cheering as they stripped the woman.”
The men reportedly also robbed her of Sh10 200 (about R1 300), a Samsung Galaxy cellphone worth Sh27 000 (about R3 360), one bottle of perfume, a clutch bag and a make-up kit. The total value of her loss was about Sh41 700 (about R5 200).
