TWO young kids died in a shack fire in Sweet Homes in Philippi during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Siblings Sisonke (6) and Kungawo Nazo (2) burnt beyond recognition and their mum Nowakhe Nazo (41) is fighting for her life at Mitchells Plain Hospital.
It’s alleged that as the flames grew stronger, the mum screamed for help and residents responded in numbers.
They lifted the burglar door for her to crawl out when she realised that her kids were still in the shack.
She begged them to let her go back but residents couldn’t lift the hot burglar door again, resulting in both deaths!
The cause of the fire is unknown but residents suspect that an electricity box exploded while they were asleep. Forest Ndathane said he was awakened by the screams of the mother.
“I jumped out of bed and saw the shack on fire. I called for help and we tried to break down the burglar door, but it was just too strong.
We finally managed to lift it up and the mum came out but the kids couldn’t make it,” he said.
Relative Nombini Mkoloti (38) said they were heart broken. “I was so weak when I heard the news, but I have to be strong for my sister during this difficult time.”
Theo Layne of Fire and Rescue Services confirmed the fire. “Two kids were found with fatal burns and the cause of the fire could not be determined at the time.”
